The school supply list isn’t finished.
The routine isn’t perfect.
Your child is still melting down at the thought of wearing socks.
And the first day of school is almost here.

If you’re feeling behind, overwhelmed, or unsure if you’ve “done enough” to get ready—this message is for you.

At The Learning Tree ABA, we work with families across Maryland, and every August we hear the same quiet fears:

“Did I prepare them enough?”
“What if it’s a disaster?”
“What if I forgot something important?”

So here’s your reminder:
You’re not behind. You’re not failing. And you’ve done more than you think.

Here’s what actually matters right now:

✅ That your child feels loved.

Your child might not fully understand the schedule change.
They might not know their teacher yet.
But they do know when they’re safe.
When they’re seen.
When they’re loved.

That emotional foundation does more than any checklist ever could.

✅ That transitions are gentle and predictable.

Forget reinventing your entire routine overnight.

Instead, focus on one or two simple anchors:

  • A visual schedule that shows wake-up to school time
  • A consistent morning phrase (“Today is a school day—we can do this.”)
  • A familiar goodbye routine at drop-off (hug + hand squeeze + wave)

These little points of predictability help regulate your child’s nervous system—even when everything else feels new.

✅ That your expectations are realistic.

Will everything go smoothly the first week? Maybe not. And that’s okay.

If your child:

  • Tolerates the bus ride without screaming
  • Makes it halfway through the day
  • Uses one coping strategy they’ve been learning

That’s success.

Focus on progress, not perfection. Growth doesn’t always look polished.

✅ That you give yourself some grace, too.

Your child isn’t the only one adjusting.
You’re adjusting, too.

You’re holding schedules, emotions, appointments, and the invisible weight of trying to do what’s best for your child—every single day.

And that’s a lot.

So if the lunch isn’t Pinterest-worthy, or the backpack still has last year’s tag on it, or you cried a little after drop-off… you’re still doing beautifully.

One Last Thing: It’s Okay If You Need Help

Sometimes the first week of school reveals challenges you couldn’t predict—new behaviors, emotional regressions, or sensory struggles that don’t show up until the pressure hits.

That’s normal. And that’s where support matters.

At The Learning Tree ABA, we partner with Maryland families through transitions like these every year. Whether you need help adjusting routines, creating visuals, or just talking through what’s coming up—we’re here for you.
